New York, Part 6

Posted by Rebecca

The last few days in New York were pretty quiet.  We drove back from New York City to Jamestown – about 7 hours.  On the way we stopped in Newburgh to meet my Uncle Harlin and Auntie Norma for lunch.  They live in Wallkill, NY, at the Watchtower Farm Branch Office.

ny6

Back in Jamestown, we did a little sightseeing in the country….

ny5

And we visited a local Amish farm.  Did you know that Amish farms are one of the fastest-growing segments of the U.S. farm community?  They are also a great place to buy plants for your garden and patio.

While at the Amish farm, John’s mom spotted a weedy patch that was, in her opinion, just begging to be cultivated.  It was dense with burdock.  Burdock’s can make two claims to fame. It was in the original recipe for root beer, and was the inspiration for velcro.  The leaves are a little bitter, but delicious when mixed with egg and flour, seasoned, and lightly fried as little fritters.

ny2

The Amish family was kind enough to let John’s mom do a little weeding for them, and we ate well that night.  :)

And now for the continuation of Day 2 in NYC….

After our walking tour of Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights, we took the subway Uptown for a picture in front of the gang’s favorite diner.

Tom’s Restaurant, also known on Seinfeld as Monk’s Diner, is the inspiration of Suzanne Vega’s 1991 hit, Tom’s Diner.

On the streets in Morningside Heights.

Next a trek through the way-too-crowded Theater District and Times Square.

We ended our evening at Eataly, a massive Italian marketplace full of shopping, wine, and eateries – a foodie’s dream come true.

nyc

Double photo-bomb – this is the family we traveled with, and they were taking a family picture while I was in the loo.  I was able to rush back in time to unexpectedly appear in the photo, only to be outdone by the handsome, posing waiters behind me.

A view of the Empire State Building from Eataly.  If the weather had been better, we would have had an unobstructed view of the city, as the roof and walls are retractable, making it a great destination for a balmy summer evening.

Our second full day in NYC involved a lot of sightseeing via walking.  We walked and walked and walked.  The weather was still grey, but way less rainy, and not too hot or muggy, so it was a great day for walking.  Did I mention we did a lot of walking?….

Here are a few famous, and a few less famous, sights:

A great view of the under-construction Freedom Tower, as seen from Brooklyn Heights (it’s the one with the crane on it).

I’m not yet done with the day, but I have way too many photos still to share, so stay tuned….

New York, Part 3

Now that things are back in blogging order, here’s the third installment of my New York trip….

We spent a few days in bustling New York City, one of my favorite places.  Its energy is contagious.  And every time I go I see something new and fascinating.

ny7

ny6

First we took a tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Our tour group focused on the Egyptian, Babylonian and Assyrian world powers, and the historical authenticity of the Bible.  It was fantastic.

ny3

ny1

Next we took a rainy stroll through Central Park.  While the rain put a damper on things (groan…), it made the park appear cleaner and greener than ever!

ny8

After tiring of the weather conditions, we headed to Little Italy where we spent the rest of the day noshing on scrumptious cannolis, homemade pasta, fresh mozzarella, marinated vegetables, Italian bread and more olive oil than you can imagine; and sipping red wine and limoncello.  Molto delizioso!

ny4

And finally, the day was made complete by catching up with some old Reno friends who have recently moved to NYC.

At 41 miles in circumference, Chautauqua Lake is a sparkling summer destination for boating and fishing in Western New York.  While not considered one of the Finger Lakes, it is long and narrow – 17 miles long and just 2 miles wide.

There are several towns, villages, and settlements on the shores of the lake, including the Chautauqua Institution, a non-profit adult education center and summer resort, founded in 1874.

These photos were taken at beachy Bemus Point, population 362.

I just returned from a lovely trip to the East Coast, visiting my friend, John.  The first few days were spent in Chautauqua County, mostly around Jamestown and Chautauqua Lake.  It’s a beautiful area with lots of old buildings that date back to the 1800′s and a landscape covered with lush vegetation.

NYg

Red brick roads can be found in many residential neighborhoods.

NYm

Summer is in full bloom.

Does anyone know what kind of pretty tree this is?  I asked my friends on Instagram, and no-one knew….

Coming Soon….

I spent the last 11 days taking in the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of New York – upstate and the city.  I have pictures coming soon; but in the meantime, enjoy these views from the plane yesterday, during my bumpy, roller-coaster ride into the Reno Tahoe International Airport.

Boston, MA

Did you know I was born in Massachusetts?  I was born in Falmouth, on the Cape, but left for Canada when I was 2.

I’ve returned to Falmouth once – in 2010 – and to Boston twice – in 2010, and last April when my brother ran in the Boston Marathon.  Like everyone else on Monday, I watched with much sadness as the news unfolded about the terrible events that took place.  It’s hard to understand why anyone would do something like this, and pointless, really, to try.

But I do have hope in humanity, and hope in the future.  And because I’m one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, I believe that God will fix the pain caused by trauma like this.  I’m not going to use this blog as a forum to express my beliefs, but if you have any questions about my optimism for the future, just send me an email and I would be happy to answer them.  Or you can visit our official website here.

This attack on the city, and on the runners and their friends and families, has left me nostalgic and remembering the great times I have spent there.  So I wanted to share a few of my favorite photos of the city that’s just down the road from my birthplace….

Weekend Away

Posted by Rebecca

At this time two weeks ago I was road-tripping to the San Francisco Bay Area with my dear friend, Monica.  We visited her sister-in-law and our friend, Alaina, who moved there from Reno a couple of years ago.

SF1

It was a fantastic weekend of catching up, shopping, eating and movies.

We didn’t really do any sight-seeing – we were too busy enjoying each others’ company – but I did get some fun shots of the Bay Bridge on our way into the city.

If you are ever in Burlingame, just south of San Francisco, you must try this superb Burmese restaurant that Alaina took us to, called Mingalaba.  I had never tried Burmese food before (Burma – or Myanmar – shares a border with Thailand), but I love trying new cuisines.  We had an amazing meal full of new and old flavors like curry, coconut, and tea leaves.  It was such a treat, and I will be back!

Western New York – Part 4

Posted by Rebecca

The rest of the trip was spent visiting John’s friends and family, doing a little shopping in Erie, PA (which was way too rainy to snap any photos), and relaxing.

My friend, Karina and I.  She’s a Reno girl, who married John’s cousin.  John and I met the weekend of their wedding.

Pretty reflections.

Most of the leaves had fallen for the year, but I was still able to see some pretty colors.

Flying over the Rocky Mountains, on my way home.
