Last weekend my cousin, George, was visiting from Australia. We had a couple of days crammed full of sightseeing and fun. My favorite stop was the Nevada Museum of Art.
According to their website, “The Nevada Museum of Art is the only accredited art museum in the state of Nevada…. With accreditation, the Museum joins the ranks of other significant institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Just 5% of all museums in the US earn AAM accreditation.” Impressive!
Currently, the museum has, among others, an exhibition entitled, The Light Circus: Art of Nevada Neon Signs. It’s a collection of old-Nevada neon that has been painstakingly acquired and restored by Reno-local, and my friend Nadia’s husband, Will Durham. It’s a fun display of kitschy nostalgia, and a must see if you are in the area. But hurry – this is the last weekend the exhibition is on display.
Here are a few highlights:
Another fun feature of the museum is the large roof-top balcony. It’s extra fun if you have some free time and a panoramic feature on your camera phone.
And finally, don’t pass on the gift shop. It’s full of great gifts and keepsakes, and perfect trailer-girl greeting cards, like these ones:
